CONSULATE GENERAL JOINS CONSULAR CORPS’ TOUR OF COOK COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS

CHICAGO, 22 March 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago, represented by Consul Melvin Almonguera and Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) Officer Rocylyn De Leon, participated in the Consular Corps’ tour of Cook County Department of Corrections (CCDOC) located at 2700 S California Ave, Chicago on 20 March 2024.
Organized by the Office of Foreign Missions in Chicago (OFM-Chicago), the activity provided an overview of CCDOC procedures and a tour of the jail facilities. 25 consulates based in Chicago joined the event.
The CCDOC is one of the largest single site county pre-detention facilities in the US, catering to almost 5,000 detainees, both males and females, undergoing pre-trial and trial supervision for crimes committed in the county, including Chicago. It covers more than eight (08) city blocks with ten (10) divisions and has its own health services facility.

During the tour, the participants were brought to the different sections of the facility and were briefed on booking and discharge procedures, and correctional programs, among others. They were also shown its detention cells and dormitories for both male and female detainees.
Under its ATN mandate, the Consulate General maintains close coordination with jail and prison authorities to facilitate consular notifications and other requests relative to detained Filipino nationals. END
