PHILIPPINE CONSULATE IN CHICAGO, ILLINOIS SOYBEAN ASSOCIATION DISCUSS WAYS TO ENHANCE FOOD SECURITY IN THE PHILIPPINES

18 August 2023 (Chicago) – The Philippine Consulate Genera in Chicago met with the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) to explore ways of enhancing food security in the Philippines.

Consul General J. Susana V. Paez, accompanied by Consul Ryan Gener and Economic Assistant Joey Erandio, met with, among others, ISA Director of Market Development Todd Main, Trade Coordinator David Headley, International Market Specialist Caitlyn Abbey. They discussed possible the medium-term projections for the soybean meal market and possible initiatives to help Filipino farms increase their productivity.

The Philippines is one of the main markets for soybean meal used as animal feeds. As of 2021, the Philippines was the 5th largest destination of US soybean meal exports ($238 million), after Mexico, Colombia, Canada, and Ecuador.

Illinois is third largest agriculture exporting state in the US, and is the second leading exporter of soybeans. Soybean are Illinois’ largest export by value ($2.9 billion as of 2019).

The Philippine Consulate expressed openness to explore ways in which ISA could contribute to enhancing the productivity and sustainability of Filipino farmers, in pursuit of the thrust of the Marcos Administration towards agricultural modernization and food security. END
