CHICAGO 09 August 2025 – Consul General Atty. Melanie Rita B. Diano joined the Chicago Nightingales for a commemoration marking the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 09 August 2025, at the Trickster Cultural Center in Schaumburg, Illinois.
This is the first-known commemoration held in the US Midwest Region of America. Also in attendance were Mr. Tony Hernandez, a 102-year-old WWII veteran in Japan American Legion Central Park Post 1028, and Mr. Henry Roa, Korean War Veteran.
In her keynote remarks, Consul General Diano paid tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives in Hiroshima and Nagasaki eight decades ago. She commended the Chicago Nightingales, led by President Ms. Mila Machado and Advisor Ms. Rosemarie San Diego, for organizing this meaningful commemoration. The Consul General emphasized how the event exemplified core Filipino values of compassion, understanding of sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to supporting communities during moments of reflection and healing.
