Consul General Melanie Rita B. Diano joined nearly 1,000 Filipino-Americans from across the Chicagoland area and the US Midwest at the Philippine Independence Week Committee's (PIWC) Golden Jubilee and 127th Anniversary of Philippine Independence Day Grand Ball on 28 June 2025 at the Grand Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency O'Hare. Consul General Diano was accompanied by Consul Ella Karina Mitra and Protocol Officer Martyn Orcine.
The milestone event marked PIWC's 50th anniversary while commemorating the Philippines' 127th year of independence. Beyond its ceremonial significance, the Grand Ball served as a major fundraising initiative to support PIWC's ongoing humanitarian projects and community missions throughout the year.
The evening showcased the rich tapestry of Filipino culture through vibrant performances by various community organizations, culminating in the coronation ceremony for PIWC's beauty queens. The celebration reflected the deep cultural pride and unity that continues to bind the Filipino-American community in the region.
Consul General Diano, in her remarks, congratulated PIWC, under the dynamic leadership of Dra. Nida Blankas-Hernaez, on the successful staging of this year’s Independence Day celebrations - the flag-raising ceremony at the Daley Plaza and the parade that followed. She also recognized the broader mission of PIWC in advancing worthwhile initiatives such as educational programs for young Filipino-Americans, humanitarian missions to the Philippines, and raising awareness of Philippine culture, history, and traditions.
In recognition of PIWC's five decades of exemplary service to the community, Consul General Diano presented a Certificate of Commendation to Dra. Blankas-Hernaez, this year’s Overall Chairperson. The recognition acknowledges the committee's unwavering commitment to serving the Filipino-American community and maintaining strong cultural ties between the Philippines and the United States.
