CHICAGO, 24 September 2026 – Three Filipino scholars under the PhilDOST iGREAT Program at Michigan State University called on Consul General Melanie Rita B. Diano at the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago on 23 September 2026.

The scholars were Mr. Niko A. Macaraeg, Senior Science Research Specialist at the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute and PhD scholar in Biosystems Engineering; Ms. Kathleen Faith Jay O. Villarma, Senior Science Research Specialist at the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development and MSc scholar in Biosystems Engineering; and Mr. Charles A. Castro, Science Research Specialist II at the Department of Agriculture–CARAGA and PhD scholar in Plant Pathology.

During the meeting, the scholars shared their respective fields of study and research at Michigan State University, as well as their re-entry plans and how they intend to apply the knowledge and expertise gained from their studies to their respective government agencies upon their return to the Philippines.

Consul General Diano welcomed the scholars and expressed appreciation for their pursuit of advanced studies and research in fields that contribute to the Philippines’ agricultural, fisheries, and scientific development. She also reaffirmed the Consulate’s commitment to engaging Filipino students and scholars across the U.S. Midwest and strengthening its connections with the Filipino academic community. END
