Consul General Melanie Rita B. Diano attended the 5th Annual Fashion Show, Awards, and Coronation Gala of the Santacruzan Cultural Group of Greater Chicago (SCGGC) on 28 March 2026 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Chicago Naperville.
The event kicked off with a fashion show featuring the traditional and modern Filipiniana creations by Filipino designers Antonio Doloso and Tata Blas Pinuela, modeled by members of the Filipino American community and Santacruzan Reynas. The event also included cultural performances by various groups, including Rhythm of the Island, SCGGC, and the FAASD Dance Group. Other highlights of the evening were the presentation and coronation of the Santacruzan Reynas, alongside the recognition of SCGGC officers and members for their dedicated service.
In her remarks, the Consul General congratulated SCGGC on its milestone fifth year, commending the organization’s steadfast commitment to preserving and promoting Filipino cultural and religious traditions in the Midwest. She highlighted the significance of the event in showcasing the beauty of the Santacruzan and underscored the importance of supporting Filipino designers, particularly those from Iloilo and Capiz, whose works reflect the resilience and creativity of Filipino artistry.
Following her remarks, the Consul General presented a plaque of recognition to SCGGC President Ms. Joanne Turija under the Consulate’s “80 for 80” campaign, in honor of her outstanding contributions to the Filipino community, particularly her leadership and service as a nurse.
The Consul General also noted that events such as the Gala Fashion Show contribute meaningfully to strengthening people-to-people ties between the Philippines and the United States, especially as both countries mark the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year.
